Ballance Farm Environment Awards Taranaki Supreme Winner's Field Day

Thursday, 27 April 2017 10.30am: Homeleigh Trust Partnership, 993 Meremere Road RD 12, Ohangai By farmers. For farmers

Come along and see for yourself what Taranaki BFEA Supreme Winners Peter and Nicola Carver have achieved.

The Carvers utilise their range of flat to steep South Taranaki country by combining both dairy and drystock farming on Holmleigh, their 515ha family property at Ohangai, east of Hawera.

Operating with obvious consideration for the long term viability of both their farming business and the environment, Peter and Nicola have a sheep and beef breeding and finishing unit which is complemented by the 95ha dairy platform they developed to commence milking in the 2014/15 season. Around 4500su of drystock are wintered, with a 50:50 sheep to beef ratio, and this season 260 cows were peak milked.

The award judges described Holmleigh as “a very tidy, functional farm” and highlighted “excellent thinking and execution of environmental planning throughout the farm for the long-term sustainability of the land”. The judges wrote: “Overall a very impressive system all working well together giving you huge flexibility and options and also helping to ensure a sustainable business.”

Peter and Nicola say they are proud of the farm’s progress: “By developing the farm into a drystock/dairy unit combined we have maximised the productivity of the farm and spread the risk of commodity fluctuations, producing better farm efficiency and better economic returns long-term."
